What makes a password strong?

Strength comes from unpredictability, not from clever-looking substitutions. A strong password is long, drawn from a large pool of characters (upper and lower case, digits, and symbols), and contains no dictionary words, names, dates, or keyboard patterns. The more genuinely random characters it has, the more combinations an attacker must try. Reusing a password across sites also destroys its strength, because a breach on one site exposes all the others — so every account should have its own unique, randomly generated password.

For most accounts, aim for at least 16 characters; for high-value accounts like email or banking, 20 or more is sensible. Length matters more than complexity rules: each additional random character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs far faster than swapping a letter for a symbol does. Are random passwords safer than passphrases?

Both can be strong; they trade off differently. A long passphrase of several unrelated words is easier to type and remember and can carry plenty of entropy. A random character string of the same strength is shorter but impossible to memorise. If you rely on a password manager — which you should for most accounts — random strings are ideal because you never type them by hand. Reserve a memorable passphrase for the handful of secrets you must enter manually, such as your device login or password-manager master password.

No. Every password is generated entirely inside your browser using the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), which is the same cryptographically secure source browsers use for security-critical operations. The characters never touch our servers, are never logged, and aren’t stored anywhere after you leave the page. You can confirm this by disconnecting from the network — the generator keeps working. Copying to your clipboard is a local action handled by your operating system.

How should I store generated passwords?

Use a reputable password manager. It encrypts your vault behind a single strong master password (or passphrase) and fills credentials for you, so you can have a unique, long, random password for every account without memorising any of them. Avoid storing passwords in plain text files, spreadsheets, browser notes, or sticky notes. Enable two-factor authentication on the manager itself and on important accounts, so a stolen password alone isn’t enough to get in.

Entropy measures how unpredictable a password is, expressed in bits. Each bit doubles the number of possible passwords, so 50 bits means roughly a thousand trillion combinations. A password drawn randomly from a larger character set, or made longer, has more entropy and takes exponentially longer to brute-force. The strength meter here estimates entropy from the length and the variety of characters you’ve enabled — higher bits mean a tougher password, which is why long, mixed-character passwords rate best.
